How are ratings calculated? Sorted by: Top reviews Top reviews Most recent. Carla Reviewed in the United States on August 5, The script is real. Some people here write that “they used the N word too much, and it made [them] uncomfortable”. Deal with it. That IS the way the characters were built, it IS the way many folks at the time, and actually, even now, speak. Walk a mile in someone else’s shoes Some people say “there’s too much dialogue.

Read a book! Try something that requires you to pay attention for more than 15 seconds. It’s a good life skill. At worst, committing to appreciating a movie like this will expand and improve your appreciation of actual art. Denzel is magical. Viola, although having a secondary role, shines as ever. The conflicts are presented in a way that makes the viewer understand, and not demonize the characters amidst their flaws.

At times you may get angry with them, but you ultimately understand the human condition from their perspective. THAT is what a good writer does with a character. THAT is what a good actor does with a role: evoking empathy is a must. And all of this was executed brilliantly. Some people may feel the story doesn’t uplift them. Good writing is not measured by the way a story makes you feel uplifted.

You may get the feeling that you’re stuck. But the way the story thrives is precisely in the characters’ ability to “put one foot in front of the other,” like one of the characters in the movie says. This role showcases Washington’s broad abilities very well. Helpful Report abuse. Fences gives us another stunning performance as a s era man struggling to raise his family the best he can find a way.

Both of the leading actors played with such intensity and emotion, I felt as if I was watching their story play out in front of me, as if I was in the room. I don’t want to give too much away, but I will tell you that we are our parents children, the good, the bad and the complicated. No matter how much we try, we still carry characteristic of them within us. As for the movie, you will find that there are those of us who are fighting outside demons, but then we have those demons within us that are much harder to fight.

What is important that we have people around us that love us unconditionally, and they are what make our lives matter, even if we don’t see it in ourselves.

You will not regret seeing this incredible journey of a man and his family. And the forks in the road that the family must take by the actions of this man.

I loved this movie! It was right on for the era it portrayed. I love that the movie delved more into the characters than the scenery. We feel the crushed dreams of his youth. Denzel Washington was excellent in this role, the viewer could imagine his life through his stories, facial expressions and body language.

Now, the wife, played by Viola Davis, brought much out of me, being married nearly 40 years myself, then getting “tired of the foolishness” and leaving, I became angry at what she did not do, but by the end, I realized she did what she thought was best. Viola gave true heart to this role, the emotions she portrayed, were vivid and true. If you cannot relate to this movie, that’s ok, but in my world, and many others like me, growing up this was a reality, this thing called hard life, dashed dreams and harsh realities, the only hope your parents had were that you grew to be better than them.

Highly recommend viewing this movie Ed Reviewed in the United States on April 9, The acting in this film is terrific. I thought every character was engaging and realistic. However, I have never seen an adaptation of a play that was so lightly adapted. The first long soliloquy by Denzel really struck me that we were watching a video of a stage production. Settling in to that realization helped cope with the pace and also helped me realize that this film was not advocating for the behavior of the characters as some reviewers apparently expected but was just presenting a biographical sketch from the period.

Life the way the writer saw it, that’s all. With all the tedious Hollywood agendizing these days, that was actually very refreshing. But I’m still used to Denzel being a hero though there was Training Day And as a dad, it was a little painful to watch the family dynamics. John P.

I grew up in an all-white suburb of Pittsburgh called Mt. Talk about better late than never! I decided to take a short-cut, and watch the movie.

It is truly excellent. The movie, and play which was also produced on Broadway, is based on the real-life story of Troy Maxson, one of the best baseball players of all time. It remains an unfathomable part of American history that Black professional sports stars mostly now all live in million dollar homes, with the true super-stars sporting yachts and other accoutrements of the super-rich, yet in the time-period of my lifespan the super great black stars like Maxson would retire with not a penny to their name and become men who picked up the garbage.

The movie was released in and it was directed by Denzel Washington who also provides a brilliant performance as Troy Maxson, which is matched by the performance of Viola Davis as his wife.

At times it is gut-wrenching. Denzel Washington set the hook deep in my brain from the opening scene. It must have been exhausting work. Could Maxson himself have been in my backyard?

A facsimile for the steel mills that were there, but are no longer available as the backdrop for a movie. He would walk miles to Mobile, AL. He robbed for a living, killed a man, spent 15 years in prison, where he learned how to play baseball. He met and married Rose, by whom he had his son Cory, played by Jovan Adepo.

His other son, before his prison time, is Lyons, played well by Russell Hornsby. The essential issue of the presence of the father, particularly in black families, is a key theme, as Maxson tries to shape up his son, and keep him out of sports.

Cory, denied the football scholarship because his father would not sign the papers, joins the Marines. Why, oh why, I wonder? Will you stay the full twenty, and be able to retire at full pay, at the age of 38? An absolutely great movie. And I have a lot more of Wilson to read. Don’t get me wrong.

I really enjoyed Manchester by the Sea! The 1st 5 minutes of August Wilson’s dialogue is so brilliant that I felt transported into his world. I stayed on that journey until the end. Like many plays made into films, there is an austere ascetic quality to the sets which might bother some stimulation-needy viewers.

But I was completely in awe of Denzel as an actor and as a director. The rest of the cast is equally impressive. A Tour de Force! To add insult to injury, Casey Affleck turns to Denzel from the stage at the Oscar’s telling Denzel how wonderful he is.
